Maria M. Ortega, C.H.O.W., Peer Educator
Maria is not new to BAY Positives. Prior to being hired, Maria was a member of BAY Positives. She has been HIV+ since 2001. She is a Bay Area Native. Born in San Leandro and raised in Hayward, her roots lie in White Shield, North Dakota. She is a young 25 year old Native American Trans woman. Lakota Sioux is the nation/tribe in which where she comes from. She is the first Native American, not to mention Trans woman to be employed by BAY Positives. She volunteered with us before becoming one of the new Peer Advocates.

Maria has a Baby Chihuahua named “Sugar”. Sugar is the love of our agency. Sugar is the agency’s guard dog/mascot. Everyone who’s ever met Sugar has fallen in love with this cutie. She recently completed the ICHO-Institute for Community Health Outreach training in August of 2006 becoming a certified C.H.O.W.-Community Health Outreach Worker. Upon the completion of her training she became the New Peer Educator. She has a great love for her work and is dedicated to serving/educating the community. She just wants the chance to give back to the community she feels has given her so much.
